Russia's energy empire: Putin and the rise of Gazprom | DW Documentary
For decades, European countries have been dependent on Russian gas imports. And they did it to themselves. The biggest culprit? Germany. Only after Russia declared war on Ukraine did the German government realize that Russia has been using gas as a weapon for a long time.
How did this come about? What is Russian President Vladimir Putin's plan? The films take a look behind the scenes of the Russian gas monopoly Gazprom. They show the genesis of an empire: from the collapse of the Soviet Union to the Russian goldrush, the restrictions imposed by newly-elected President Vladimir Putin and his regime’s subsequent arrests and expropriations. The filmmakers shot the film before the start of Russia's attack on Ukraine; a project that would no longer be possible today. The material allows viewer...

Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU has sanctioned much of Russia’s economy, but Russia’s natural gas trade remains untouched. The EU gets nearly a quarter of its energy from natural gas, and almost half of that comes from Russia, the world’s largest gas exporter. As the EU’s largest economy, Germany is Russia’s biggest customer, paying Russia’s state-owned gas company 200 million euros. So while Germany has even sent Ukraine weapons, in a historic shift of military policy, through its gas supply Germany is helping to pay for the war it’s trying to stop.

Why the EU is still buying Russian energy? | DW News
Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, the European Union has radically reduced its imports of coal, oil and natural gas from Russia. In fact, the bloc's stated goal is to eliminate all Russian fossil fuel imports by 2027. But there is one glaring exception to this trend: Liquefied Natural Gas - or LNG, which the EU has been importing in record volumes from Russia. Video features report by DW’s Jack Parrock, as well as expert analysis from Carole Nakhle, CEO and founder of Crystol Energy, a consulting group.

Kharkiv strikes: Russia destroys more Ukrainian energy plants
The Ukrainian region of Kharkiv has been under relentless Russian bombardment in the past two days.
Air raid sirens and explosions could be heard from Kharkiv city early on Thursday morning.
The Mayor says it was struck by Russian missiles.
On Wednesday, three people were killed in another missile attack in the town of Lyptsi in northern Kharkiv.
Russian missile and kamikaze drone strikes on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have escalated recently, damaging or destroying up to 80% of the country’s thermoelectric power plants and half of its hydro stations.
Russia says the attacks are revenge for Ukrainian operations inside Russia, which have targetted oil refineries deep inside its territory.
Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford reports from Ukraine's Kharkiv region.

It’s inherently hard to pivot away from piped gas. Unlike oil and coal, which can be rerouted, gas pipelines cost billions, take years to build, and physically connect producer and buyer directly, making them long-term commitments. That was the origin of Germany’s dependence on Russian gas, and over time it’s only deepened. Today, as the world tries to punish Russia through sanctions, that dependence is getting in the way.
